The author of the design and sculptor is Gaetano Cecere.
The medal is intended to reward servicemen of any military rank who have committed a heroic deed in a non-combat setting.
The medal is an octagon 1 3/8 inches with the image of an eagle with raised wings sitting on the lictor fascia . On both sides of the eagle are two groups of stars in the amount of six and seven pieces. A thin laurel branch is depicted above a left group of six stars.
On the reverse of the medal is a shield framed by two thick laurel and oak branches, on which the letters US are superimposed. In the center of the letter is "US". On the top of the octahedron is the inscription “SOLDIER`S MEDAL” and below “FOR VALOR”. At the bottom of the reverse there is a place for engraving the name of the awarded.
