Biography
Igor Ivanovich Shelest was born in Moscow on January 24, 1914.
After graduation, he worked as a riveter at an aircraft factory, and studied at the Higher Glider School. After graduation, he worked as a glider instructor at the Moscow Glider School, and from 1934 to 1937 an instructor at the Higher Glider School. While working at VLPSH, he tested a number of glider models. From 1937 to 1939 he worked as a pilot, detachment commander in the Central Aero Club . Since 1939 he went to work as a test pilot at TsAGI . He studied at the Moscow Aviation Institute . Since April 1941, he joined the LII .
In the summer of 1941, the 2nd separate sky defense squadron of Moscow was formed, of which Igor Shelest served in July - August 1941. Then he was recalled back to work at the LII. He tested the airborne transport gliders KAI-5 "Falcon", "Eagle", DBP-2 [1] . He also tested the UT-2 hovercraft, Tu-2 S, I-224, Yak-9 aircraft with the M-107VK engine. An unfortunate accident occurred in September 1944 with Shelest: test pilot G.I. Khruslov (1913-1944) taxied to the runway when an emergency fighter Igor Shelest sat on it with the engine turned off; in the collision, several people died, including Khruslov. [2]
In addition to tests, Igor Shelest was involved in the development of various devices for aircraft, together with a test pilot and V. S. Vasyanin, he developed a system for refueling aircraft in the air from wing to wing and conducted its tests [3] . For his development received 7 copyright certificates.
In 1954, he was awarded the title of “Test Pilot of the 1st Class”. Since 1954, Igor Shelest worked as the scientific secretary of the methodical council of the LII, then the head of the flight inspection group and from 1962 to 1985, the leading methodological engineer.
From the beginning of the 1960s, he began to publish his documentary stories about test pilots, which appeared in central magazines, in particular in the magazine Young Guard , and then were published as separate books. He became a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR .
Igor Shelest died on April 13, 1992 . He was buried in a cemetery near the village of Ostrovtsy, Ramensky district, Moscow region .
