Tacao (mountain)

Takao ( 高 尾 山 Takao-san ) is a mountain in Japan . It is located on the territory of the quasi-national park Meiji no Mori, in the city of Hachioji , 50 kilometers from Tokyo towards Fuji . Altitude 599 m (1,965 ft) above sea level.

Geography

Takao-san rises at the very border of the subtropical zone and the temperate climate zone . Despite the proximity of the mountain to the capital of Tokyo, Mount Takao is rich in wildlife, densely covered with forests, more than 1,200 species of plants grow on its slopes, 140 species of ferns. There is a wide variety of animals and insects, including wild boars and monkeys .

Takao-san is a popular place for hiking and hiking. More than 2.5 million people visit this place annually. On the top of the mountain, which can be reached not only on foot, but also on the cable car and cable car , offers fantastic views of Mount Fuji , Tokyo and Yokohama .

Mount Takao is closely associated with Japanese Tengu folklore and a bit of kami . At the Yakuo-in Temple there is a huge sculptural image of a tengu with a long nose and wings on its back.

Every year, on the second Sunday of March, at the foot of Takao Mountain, the Hivatari Festival of Fire Procession takes place. The hermit monks Yamabushi ( 山 伏 ) of the Buddhist temple Yakuo-in (Takao-san Yakuō-in Yūki-ji) conduct a large open fire ritual called Saito Goma-ku, burn nadegi sticks inscribed with the hopes of peoples and desires. Thousands of Japanese and tourists participate in the fiery procession. Yamabushi lead the procession, walking barefoot through the hot coals. Believers pray for the safety of family, body and soul, and then follow the Yamabushi through hot coals. It is believed that fire cleanses people, burning all pollution. [2]
