Biography

Alfonso Perez was born on January 16, 1949 in the city of Cartagena , department of Bolivar . He achieved his first serious success in the ring in 1970, when he won the Central America and the Caribbean championship in lightweight. A year later, he won a silver medal at the home of the Pan American Games in Cali, losing to Puerto Rican Luis Davile in the final match. Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , while he was entrusted with the flag of Colombia at the opening ceremony. At the Olympics, he reached the stage of the semifinals, after which, with a score of 2: 3, he lost to Hungarian Laszlo Orban . Having received a bronze Olympic medal, he decided to try himself among professionals and left the team [1] .

Perez's professional debut took place in April 1973, he won his first rival by knockout in the second round. Over the next two years, he spent many successful fights, including knocking out Panamanian Eusebio Pedrosu , the future long-term world champion according to the World Boxing Association (WBA). In March 1975, he won the Columbia Featherweight Championship, but soon suffered his first defeat - by unanimous decision from the unbeaten Reinaldo Hidalgo. From that moment on, his progress began to decline, victories began to alternate with losses, and the level of rivals decreased markedly.

Perez continued to enter the ring until 1981, won and defended the Colombian champion title in the lightweight category, but he still failed to participate in the match for the world championship belt. In total, in professional boxing, he spent 43 fights, of which 31 ended with victory (including 19 ahead of schedule), lost 9 times, in three cases a draw was recorded.
