Biography
Mirivilis was born in the village of Sikamya ( Συκαμιά ) (since 1940 - Sikaminea ( Συκαμινέα ) [3] ) on the island of Lesbos , which was then still under Ottoman control , on June 30, 1892. In his first school years, he was marked by a lack of interest in lessons and lack of discipline. But despite this, he showed interest in literature at the gymnasium. Before his liberation from Ottoman (1912), Lesvos survived the heyday of Greek enlightenment and Mirivilis, having come into contact with the cultural circles of the island, began to collaborate with newspapers and magazines. At the same time, solving his financial problems, Mirivilis worked as a teacher. In 1912 he moved to Athens , where he enrolled in the philosophical and legal faculties of the University of Athens , and at the same time worked as an editor in various newspapers. In the same year, he volunteered for the Greek army and took part in the Balkan wars , in the First World War and in the Asia Minor campaign of the Greek army . After the Asia Minor disaster, he returned to Lesbos, where he remained until 1932. Here Mirivilis published two newspapers: Campana ( Καμπάνα , bell, 1923-1924) and Tahidromos ( Ταχυδρόμος , messenger) before moving to Athens in 1932. He continued to cooperate with various newspapers ( Katimerini , Acropolis , Η Πρωία , Δημοκρατία by Alexandra Papanastasiu), magazines ( , Το Ναυτικό μας , τττατ . At the same time, from 1938 to 1955, he worked in the library of the Greek Parliament . In 1940, Mirivilis was awarded the for the Blue Book short story, was one of the founding members of the and became a member of the Academy of Athens in 1958. With the start of the Greco-Italian War of 1940, Mirivilis, together with other Greek writers, signed the “Appeal of Greek intellectuals to intellectuals of the whole world” During the years of the civil war of 1946-1949, Mirivilis sided with the anti-communist camp. He died in Athens on July 19, 1969 from pneumonia.
Writer
Mirivilis first declared himself as a writer in 1915 with the stories of Red Stories. The first period of his literary work reflects his present and recent past of his life in Mytilene , but mainly his participation in wars. The culmination of his anti-war spirit is his novel Life in the Grave (1924) [4] . This period ends in 1932 with the novel The Teacher with Golden Eyes. During the second period, he turned to the past and recollections from his childhood years. The works of this period are short stories Vasilis Arvanitis (1943), “Idols” ( α παγανά , 1945), Pan (1946), the novel “The Virgin Mermaid” ( Η Παναγιά η Γοργόνα , 1949) and the storybooks Green Book (1935), Blue Book (1939), Red Book (1952) and Cherry Book (1959).
The writer and historian Dimitris Fotiadis , a former employee of Mirivilis in the magazine "Modern Greek Literature", writes in his Memoirs in 1983 [5] :
| Mirivilis was a democrat and in the beginning was a supporter of Venizelos ... ... But, unfortunately, without hesitation, he abused his masterpiece “Life in the Grave”. Each new edition was worse than the previous one. Mirivilis compromised the reaction. He removed from his book everything that could hurt her. In other words, he was killing his book. What a pity! His actions were evaluated where it should be and, finally, he became an academician, that is, mortal, like everyone who belongs to a marble building on the street Panepistimiu. But if one of his descendants decides to publish Life in the Grave in its first edition, he will make it truly immortal. It takes courage. It should be resurrected from the dead, "Life in the Grave." |
