Enchitreid ( lat. Enchytraeidae ) is a family of low-chained worms . They look like small earthworms that live in soil saturated with organic matter or in the marine environment. The peculiar kind of dark-colored oligochaeta Mesenchytraeus solifugus is known as the “ice worm” ( English ice worm ), as it inhabits mountain glaciers , individuals of this species die at a temperature of several degrees above zero. The most famous enhytreid species is Enchytraeus buchholzi , which has received commercial use as food for aquarium fish.
