Podgainov, Stepan Ilich

Stepan Ilyich Podgainov was born on November 19, 1915 at Balanda station (now the city of Kalininsk, Saratov region) in a poor peasant family. After finishing 6 classes of secondary school, he worked at the Balandinsky distillery, at the same time continuing his studies at evening working school. In 1937 he began serving in the army . In 1940 he graduated from the annual military-political courses and joined the CPSU (b) .

He fought on the Western Front of the Great Patriotic War. At the beginning of the war he was in the position of artillery battery commissar . On August 14, 1941, he was seriously wounded, until the end of the year he recovered his health in the hospital. He left the hospital with a suitably limited 2nd degree, and served further service in the rear area near Novosibirsk . From June 1943 he fought at the front. He participated in the Battle of Kursk , during which on July 5 and 7, 1943, Podgainov’s artillery unit successfully repelled attacks from enemy tanks and infantry, despite unequal forces.

In 1946, Podgainov was dismissed for health reasons. He lived and worked in Kalininsk . He died in 1980.
