History
The collection is notable for several rare and alternative versions of famous songs. The CD contains compositions from the era of the IRS Records label , starting from the mini-album Chronic Town (1982) to Document (1987), thereby demonstrating the full coverage of the band’s early musical career.
The collection has the alternative name “File Under Grain”, referring to the photo from the cover. On the cover of the previous album - Document , there was the inscription "File Under Fire", and on the album Reckoning - "File Under Water". On the album insert was a picture of Michael Stipe with the phrase “They Retouched My Face” on top of his eyes.
The collection was released in October 1988, a month before the band’s debut on Warner Bros. with the album Green . In total, Eponymous reached # 44 on the United States and # 69 in the UK.
