Pagai Selatan [1] [2] ( indonese . Pulau Pagai Selatan ) is one of the Mentawai islands lying to the west of the central part of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean . Administratively, it is part of the Indonesian province of Western Sumatra .

It is about 55 km long and 20 km wide. It is located southeast of the island of Pagai Utara and far northwest of the island of Engano . The highest point of Pagai Selatan is the Gunung Mantai Mountain covered with forests, whose height is 302 m above sea level. During the 2007 earthquake, Pagai Selatan rose above sea level, resulting in the formation of 6 new small islands in the vicinity of the island [3] . The epicenter of the 2010 earthquake was located southwest of the coast of the island; a strong tsunami caused by this earthquake hit Pagai Selatan, the waves moved 600 m inland [4] .
According to the data for 2000, the combined population of Pagai Utar and Pagai Selatan was 20,974 people [5] . The island is home to several endemic animal species, including the Pagai macaque , which is endangered.
