Geography
Located off the southwest coast of the Isle of Manland in the Scallow Islands group of islands. The nearest major islands are Oxna and Papa in the north, Trondra in the northeast, East Burra in the east, South Havra in the south. Surrounded by many small islands: Green Hill and others.
Washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean .
The area of the island is 7.43 square kilometers [1] . The southern part of the island is connected to the rest by a narrow isthmus like tombolo .
Population
The population of the island is 776 people (2011) [2] concentrated in the northern and central parts. Localities: Bridge End and Paypil in the central part of the island, Hamnavo in the north.
Economics
The B9074 motorway ( Hamnavo - Trondra Island - Skallove - Vinsgart ) connects via several bridges to the central part of Mainland Island. East Burra and West Burra Islands are connected by a bridge in the vicinity of the village of Bridge End .
Attractions
- Easthouse Croft is a complex of farm buildings from the late XIX - early XX centuries south of the village of Paypil . In 1997 it was included in the list of architectural monuments of category “B” [3] .
- Bridgend Church - the building of the current church, built in 1867, in 2000 included in the list of architectural monuments of category "C" [4] [5] .
Other
In 2007, artist and writer Richard Horne (a pseudonym for Harry Horse ) and his wife were found dead in a bungalow near the village of Papil [6] .
