Education and Priesthood
Ennio Antonelli was born on November 18, 1936 , in Todi . He first attended seminary there, and subsequently studied at Assisi , at the Pontifical Regional Seminary, at the Pontifical Roman Senior Seminary and at the Pontifical Lateran University , in Rome , where he was granted a license in sacred theology. After that, he received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Perugia .
He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Todi on April 2, 1960 . He ordained him in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, in Todi, Hilario Alcini - titular archbishop of Nitsche, a visitor to Italian seminaries.

Bishop
He eventually became rector of the seminary of Perugia and a professor of philosophy in Assisi before being ordained a bishop on May 25, 1982 , when Pope John Paul II named him to head the diocese of Gubbio. The ordination took place on August 29, 1982 , in the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin , in Todi, led by Decio Lucio Grandoni, Bishop Orvieto and Todi , who were assisted by Santo Bartolomeo Cuadri, Bishop Terni and Narni and Antonio Fustella, Bishop of Saluzzo . On October 6, 1988, he was appointed Archbishop of Perugia CittΓ della Pieve , and he left the diocese on May 26, 1995 to become Secretary General of the Italian Episcopal Conference .
Archbishop of Florence and Cardinal
He served in this post until he was called to the Florentine Metropolis , whose archbishop was traditionally called a cardinal , and he was duly elevated to the cardinal priest with the title of church S. Andrea delle Fratte , on the Consistory of October 21, 2003 .
Antonelli was considered a papabil - an Italian candidate in the headlines at the 2005 Pontifical Conclave , in which Pope Benedict XVI was elected and in which Antonelli was an electoral cardinal .

On June 26, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation from the post of chairman of the Pontifical Council for Family Affairs, represented by Cardinal Ennio Antonelli and appointed him successor to Vincenzo Palle , until then the former bishop of Terni-Narni-Amelia, raising him at the same time to the rank of archbishop.
Member of the Conclave 2013 . Cardinal Antonelli lost the right to participate in future conclaves on November 18, 2016 after reaching the 80th anniversary.
