“ League of Public Education ” ( fr. La Ligue de l'enseignement ) - in France, a confederation of associations of public non-religious education; includes about 30,000 such associations .
History
It arose from local circles, formed on the model of the Jean Mace circle, founded in 1866 with the aim of promoting the organization of public libraries [1] .
Despite all the constraints that the league suffered from the empire , then during the clerical-monarchist reaction, the movement initiated by Masse continued to grow and expand. In 1876, there were 210 societies in the league with half a million books ; there were more than 30,000 members, and more than 400 established by the league of public and communal libraries. Since 1878, the league has been supported by the ministers of education . In April 1881, the league received a federal structure, thereby uniting circles that did not, however, lose their self-government [1] . She contributed a lot to the triumph of the republic, developing among the masses a consciousness of political responsibilities. [2]
Since 1881, the League was governed by a general council of 30 members. Her activity was extremely extensive: she gave subsidies to schools, took care of opening libraries, arranging conversations among workers, and developing vocational training . [one]
