Game career

Until 2007, Joey MacDonald played in the lower North American leagues until he became the third goalkeeper in the Detroit Red Wings after Dominic Hasek and Chris Osgood . On October 19, 2006, he first appeared on the ice in an NHL match, replacing Osgood in the first period in a game against San Jose Sharks [1] . On February 24, 2007, Detroit put MacDonald to the rejection draft, from where he was picked up by the Boston Bruins . [2]

On July 9, 2007, MacDonald, as a free agent, signed a two-year contract with the New York Islanders [3] . In the 2008/09 season, due to a series of injuries, Islanders goalkeeper Rick Dipietro was forced to miss most of the season [4] [5] , which gave MacDonald a chance to gain a foothold in the first team. But due to injuries, Joey himself missed several matches [6] [7] . In total for the season he took part in 49 matches and won 14 victories, which is a record for him. On March 27, in a game against Detroit, MacDonald made the first shutout in the NHL, reflecting all 42 shots on his goal [8] [9] .

On August 11, 2009, MacDonald moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs [10] , but before the start of the season he was put up for draft rejection [11] . After that, he went to play in the AHL for the Toronto Marlies farm club, and on March 3, 2010 he was exchanged to Anaheim Ducks for the right to choose in the seventh round of the 2011 draft [12] .

July 3, 2010 MacDonald moved to the Detroit Farm Club - Grand Rapids Griffins [13] . But during the season he was called several times to the main team, where he replaced the injured Osgood [14] [15] and Jimmy Howard [16] [17] . On July 11, 2011, MacDonald extended the contract with Detroit for a year [18] .

On February 11, 2013, Calgary Flames took MacDonald from the Detroit Crash Draft [19] . On April 20, MacDonald signed a new contract with Calgary, designed for one year [20] .

On June 19, 2015, MacDonald signed a one-year contract with the German hockey league club Schwenninger Wild Wings [21] .
