Reveal (REM album)

Reveal , the twelfth studio album of American alternative rock band REM , was released in 2001. After parting with drummer Bill Berry and releasing the controversial Up , which received mixed reviews from critics. REM recorded a more optimistic Reveal , co-produced by longtime assistant band Pat McCarthy.

In 2002, the group proposed remixing songs from the album to various producers and members of the music industry. As a result, a disc called remIX was released, which could be downloaded from the official REM website. In 2005, Warner Bros released the expanded dual-disc edition Reveal , which contained CDs and DVDs, as well as the original album booklet.

Music

The first single from Reveal - "Imitation of Life", hit the top ten of the British chart and reached the top in Japan, but failed in the homeland of the musicians. Other singles of the album: “All The Way To Reno (You're Gonna Be A Star)” and “I'll Take The Rain” musically resembled songs from the group’s previous album : “Beat A Drum”, “Summer Turns To” High ”and“ Beachball ”were stylistically inspired by the legendary The Beach Boys , whose big fans are Buck and Mills.

The opening track of the record - “The Lifting”, is a prequel to the composition “Daysleeper” from the Up album, it sings about the same character [14] .

Press Reviews

Many critics compared Reveal with the cult Automatic for the People , it received a warm welcome from the music press, compared with its predecessor - Up , so in the UK the disc reached the top of the local chart and had good sales. In the United States, the album reached the 6th line (spent 10 weeks on the Billboard 200 ) and received a “ golden ” status. Also, the disk received a gold certificate in Canada and Germany.

“When a successful and experienced group like REM still creates their best work, it's really unusual,” Bono said in 2003. “I think“ Reveal ”is one of the best recordings they have ever made: beautiful melodies, beautiful singing and a really evolving songwriting” [15] .
