Biography
In 2006, he released his debut feature film (Jadesoturi, 2006) co-produced by Finnish-Chinese, based on Finnish mythology Kalevala and filmed in the style of the Chinese martial arts movie wuxia-pian. The film was the first Finnish film to be released in China. He received two awards at the Jussi Awards in 2007 .
Annila later stated that this film did not suit him, as it turned out too lifeless. More life, he said, should have been contained in the next film, Sauna (2008), a mystical film about sins and forgiveness. The film takes place in 1595 , when the 5-year war between Russia and Sweden (1590-1595) ended. A group of surveyors-cartographers sent to delimit the borders discovers an undescribed village in the Karelian swamps. In the marshes stands a strange building with no windows, which locals call a “sauna” and claim that it stood here from prehistoric times, even before people settled here.
