History

The Russian Bibliological Society was founded in 1899 in the capital of the Russian Empire, the city of St. Petersburg [1] .

The head office of the organization was first in house number 7 on Kabinetskaya street , and after the October coup on the Fontanka River Embankment , house 21 [2] .

The first chairman (president) of the Russian Bibliological Society was a book scholar, bibliographer, librarian, publicist, encyclopedist and translator Alexander Mikhailovich Lovyagin , who was also the main initiator of the creation of the RBO; in total, he held this post for thirteen years (1899-1903; 1907-1916) [3] , almost half the life of the RBO. At different times, RBN was headed by L. N. Maykov , A. I. Lyashchenko (1903-1904) [4] , A. I. Malein , A. G. Fomin (1927-1931) [5] .

At different times, the members of the RBO were Vengerov S. A , Bondi S. M., Kufaev M. N., Meziere A. V., Toropov A. D. , Derunov K. N. , Bodnarsky B. S. , Ivask U. G. , Likhachev N.P. , Oldenburg S.F. , Piksanov N.K. and other famous personalities in the scientific community of the late XIX - early XX centuries [3] .

Already in the first year of its existence, the RBO, together with the " Society of Printing Workers ", made an attempt to fully register and catalog print works. In 1901, they published the first volume, Systemat. Murals to books published in Russia in 1899 ”, (January – July 1899) [1] .

In the Charter of the RBO, his tasks were defined as follows: “ promoting the unification of those working on book science and theoretical development and the practical application of a number of measures to facilitate the review of all kinds of literary works, as well as the study of book-keeping books in its past and present ...” [6]

The Russian Bibliological Society, among other things, developed the key issues of bibliography, contributed to streamlining bibliographic registration in government agencies, as well as the introduction of teaching bibliography and book science, as a separate subject of some higher educational institutions of Russia [2] . The bibliological society set as its goal not only the registration of current literature, but also the facilitation of its use [1] .

The RBO published many books and pamphlets concerning the theory of book science, the history of book printing and literature, the formation of book science organizations in the country, and also issued biographical materials about prominent Russian book scholars and a number of historical and literary essays [5] .

The Russian Bibliological Society has developed and proposed for consideration projects for the creation of the Russian Book Chamber and the Russian State Book Fund [5] .

In 1931, the society was transformed into the Bibliological section of the Society for Library Studies (which was created from the RBO section in 1908). In the same year, this section was disbanded and the RBO ceased to exist [2] [5] , as did the Russian Bibliographic Society a year earlier.
