In the Lodz Solidarity
In 1980, he joined Solidarity and headed the Lodz Trade Union Center [1] . He was a member of the All-Polish Commission of the Trade Union and its Presidium. Belonged to the "fundamentalist" - radical anti-communist - direction. He was close to such figures of Solidarity as Marian Yurchik and Yan Rulevsky .
Pálka was very popular in Lodz among workers, intellectuals and youth. Adhered to a conservative Catholic ideology.
With the introduction of martial law on December 13, 1981, Grzegorz Palka was interned. At the end of 1982 he was arrested. He was supposed to be one of the defendants in the planned political process, which the authorities, however, did not dare to conduct. He was released along with other “failed defendants” under an amnesty in the summer of 1984 . Since 1986, it has actually restored the regional structure of Solidarity in Lodz [2]
In the Christian-National Union
After the round table and elections of 1989, Palk became one of the founders of the socially conservative Christian-National Union. The party advocated maximum stimulation of Polish manufacturers and small businesses, social programs, tax breaks for large families. Particular attention was paid to the Catholic requirements of the prohibition of abortion and religious education in schools. At the same time, the party reacted negatively to the liberal-monetarist reforms of Leszek Balcerowicz (known as “shock therapy”).
The original center and main base of the Christian National Union was located in Lodz. Grzegorz Palka was chairman of the key лодódз organization. In 1990, Palk supported Lech Walesa's candidacy in the 1990 presidential election .
In the administration and self-government of Lodz
One of the important points of the Union program was the development of local self-government. Grzegorz Palka actively participated in the creation of the одód гражданского Civil Agreement - an association of city municipal authorities. With the support of the Civil Agreement, in 1990 Palka became vice mayor, then mayor of Lodz. He held this position until 1994 .
Having created a coalition of conservatives with liberals, Palka did not allow the Union of Left Democrats , the party of former communists, to come to power in Lodz. The representative of the liberal Union of Freedom, Marek Chekalski, became the new mayor of Lodz in 1994. Grzegorz Palka was elected Chairman of the Lodz City Council.
