England is washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean , including the North and Irish Sea . The minimum distance to Europe is 34 km [3] . The English Channel and the Pas de Calais separate the country from France . The Eurotunnel passes under the latter, connecting continental Europe with Great Britain by rail [3] .

Relief

The southern half of England is a plain separated by hills and hills, to the north the area becomes more mountainous [2] . In northern England, the Pennine Mountains are located about 350 km long [4] , separating northwestern England from Yorkshire and the northeast, which are also called the "ridge" of England [5] . The highest point in England is Mount Skofel Pike , 978 meters high [1] . In the east is a low-lying marshland, which was mainly drained for agricultural use [6] .
