The Killing of Maximovsky
Newspaper Russian Word :
PETERSBURG, 17, H. The head of the Main Prison Directorate, Maksimovsky, was mortally wounded in his office. A woman, dressed all in black, completely intelligent in appearance, shot 7 times in a row from a revolver. Rumors are circulating that the attempt was carried out by order of the s.-r.
At two in the afternoon on Monday, October 15, 1907, Rogozinnikova arrived at the reception of the Main Prison Directorate. The head of the department Maksimovsky had a reception day. Having achieved a personal reception, the terrorist entered the office and several times shot at Maksimovsky from a revolver almost point-blank. To the noise of the shots, all who were nearby ran into the office: employees, watchmen, couriers. Rogozinnikova was seized, another revolver fell out of her pocket.
During a search conducted immediately, it turned out that the body of the terrorist from neck to waist was encircled by a bra sewn specifically for carrying explosives. It contained more than 5 kg of extra dynamite and two detonators connected by a cord. To mask the smell of explosives, Eustolia was strongly perfumed. The cord was located under the jacket so that it could be pulled with teeth. The explosion was supposed to be done in the secret police, where the gendarmes were to interrogate her in the presence of large ranks. According to experts, the amount of explosives would destroy not only those present, but the entire building. The former artilleryman, Lieutenant Colonel M. S. Komissarov, the assistant chief of the St. Petersburg Security Division, who, while Rogozinnikov was being held, cut off the cords from the detonators, was called.
Execution
A military trial of Rogozinnikova took place the day after the assassination of Maximovsky and sentenced the terrorist to death by hanging. According to eyewitnesses, she met the verdict calmly and with a smile, refused the last word.
Excerpt from the last letter of Eustolia to her family:
I donβt know if you will receive my two letters written after the trial - just in case, I write again, believing that it will come. Once again, tell you, beloved, that I am not afraid. Believe that it's easy for me to die. Only the highest duty made me go where I went. No, not even duty, love, big, big love for people. For her sake, I sacrificed everything that I had ... - βHard labor and exileβ, ed. F. J. Cohn, Moscow, 1929.
