Sports career
He played for the Berlin Dynamo, trained by Willy Kühl.
In 1969-1972 he became the four-time champion of the GDR in the hall and the four-time champion in the open air (1971, 1971, 1973 and 1974): the three-time European Champion in the building (1970-1972). At the Summer Olympic Games in Munich (1972) he won a bronze medal, twice became the champion of Europe (1971 and 1974).
In 1978 he completed his sports career, worked as a junior coach in the club Dynamo (Berlin). After the unification of Germany, he worked in a sports equipment campaign.
