Biography
The son of the Kerch mayor, Major General Prince Dmitry Ivanovich Gagarin (1797–1875) [1] from his marriage with Sophia Petrovna Ivashkina. The brothers: Ivan (1830–1889), Alexander (1834–1866), and Konstantin (1841–1916) [1] . Sisters: Aglaida (1820s — 01.1865), Catherine (1828–11.4.1904), Lydia (1829–?), Elizabeth (1830–?), Alexandra (1834–?) [1] .
In 1847 he graduated from the Richelieu Lyceum in Odessa , after which he entered the Kabardinsky 80th Infantry Regiment . In 1852, Gagarin was appointed adjutant to Prince A. I. Baryatinsky [2] . He retired with the rank of captain [3] . Until the end of his days, he retained a deep respect for the memory of Field Marshal - his chief and godfather of his eldest son [2] .
"Memories of Field Marshal Prince A.I. Baryatinsky" Prince Gagarin published in the Russian Herald (1888, No. 7). They were recorded by A. P. Malshinsky , since Gagarin himself in the last years of his life suffered from "nervous exhaustion and weak eyes" [2] . In "Memoirs ...", covering the years 1847-1860, the activities of A.I. Baryatinsky in the Caucasus are described, and his description is given. Here P. D. Gagarin spoke about generals V. M. Kozlovsky and M. D. Skobelev , and also described an episode from L. Tolstoy 's hiking life when the latter was still an artillery junker [4] . Memories of meetings in the Caucasus with L. Tolstoy were published separately in Russian antiquity (1906, T. 75) [5] .
He died in January 1888 in St. Petersburg and was buried in the Alexander Nevsky Monastery at the Tikhvin Cemetery [2] . According to A. A. Polovtsev , Prince Gagarin was “not a bad but rather empty person who liked to talk and talk a lot of nonsense, especially on the topic of popular policy” [6] .
Family
The wife (since 1856) is Countess Anastasia Alexandrovna Stenbok-Fermor (09/08/1837–01.12.1891) [1] , daughter of Alexander Ivanovich Stenbok-Fermor (14.9.1809—19.5.1852) from the marriage of Nadezhda Yakovleva Alexey (05.01.1815 —03.10.1897); sister of Lieutenant-General A. A. Stenbok-Fermor and Princess N. A. Baryatinskaya . According to his mother, one of the richest women in Russia, Princess Gagarin was the heiress of the millionaire merchant S. Ya. Yakovlev . According to contemporaries, in appearance the spouses Gagarins reminded those around Desdemona and Othello [7] :
The prince's large features, his black eyes, in which sparks of passion or anger so easily lit up (and at the same time his swarthy face was pale to the lips), and also black curly hair — all this represented a sharp contrast with the graceful, graceful figure of his wife, with thin , rounded camp, with its swan gait, soft movements and with blond hair on a graceful head, with beautiful delicate features and charming smile, with which she looked at those around her, and at life. Despite her amazing meekness, she had a strong character and strong will, a lot of secular wit and instinctive understanding of things with a relatively small culture; abstract questions did not occupy it, except for religious ones. Her faith was clear and childishly simple.
Married had children:
- Anna (1854–1911), married (from 1875) to Prince Konstantin Konstantinovich Golitsyn (1854–1934), the grandson of F. S. Golitsyn [8] ;
- Alexander (16.8.1857 - 21.2.1903);
- Sophia (15.7.1859 - 10.9.1915), married (with 17.1.1882) for Count V. A. Gendrikov ;
- Dmitri (29.7.1860 - 2.9.1895, Ekaterinburg [9] );
- Hope (5.6.1873 - 9.7.1915), married (with 4.4.1893) to Count V. V. Gudovich [1] .
