Biography
Born in the family of the famous writer and poetess L. Staritskaya-Chernyakhovskaya and medical professor of the University of Kiev A. G. Chernyakhovsky . The granddaughter of the writer, playwright and public figure M.P. Staritsky .
After graduating in 1918 with honors from the Second Ukrainian Gymnasium named after The Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood studied at the Faculty of Economics of the Kiev Commercial Institute and foreign language courses.
Together with her father, professor of medicine A. G. Chernyakhovsky , on the instructions of the People’s Commissariat of Health, where she worked as a referent-translator, she went on a business trip to Germany. There she married a German citizen, whom she met in Kiev, the Swiss Theodor Haecken.
Abroad, Veronica improved her knowledge of German and English at the University of Berlin . Visited Switzerland and Italy.
Since 1920, she was among the active participants in the Ukrainian literary and artistic group Grono .
In the fall of 1929, Veronika Chernyakhovskaya was arrested on charges of involvement in the " SOU case." Contained in a Kharkov prison. In January 1930 she was released, her mother persuaded the Chekists and replaced her daughter during the trial in the dock. The sentence was conditional. But father and mother were arrested.
Veronica was arrested a second time on January 8, 1938 on charges of conducting " espionage-counter-revolutionary activities ." The reason was that she and her father in 1928-1929 went on a creative trip to Germany. During her imprisonment in Lukyanovskaya prison, Veronika Chernyakhovskaya went crazy.
September 22, 1938 she was sentenced to death. The sentence was executed on the same day. The place of her burial is unknown.
Creativity
Veronika Chernyakhovskaya is a poet and lyric poet. Early showed her talent as a poet and translator. Her works were published in the literary and art criticism almanac "Grono" and "Whirlwind of the Revolution."
She knew ancient Greek, Latin, Russian, French, German, Spanish, English. Translated fiction, its translations from German Franz Werfel and from French Andre Speer survived.
She wrote original things, for example, a poem for children “Cap and Krap. The journey of two drops of water. "
In addition to medical work in the service, she translated into Ukrainian and published: Jack London ’s novel “ Moon Valley ” (1927, reprinted in 1971), “ Germinal ” by Emil Zola , “ The Adventures of Oliver Twist ” by Charles Dickens (1929, reprinted in 1963 and 1993) and etc.
After the arrest of her parents, she printed the translations anonymously.
