Player Career

Early years

Ellis was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, but grew up in Orangeville, Ontario, where he played for the Ontario Minor Hockey Association ( OMHA ) for the Orangeville Flyers and Halton Hills Hurricanes.

After Daniel was Drafted by None of the Ontario Hockey League Clubs ( OHL ), 1996–97 season

he played in the Ontario Provincial Youth Hockey League with the Newmarket Hurricanes (OPJHL), and then moved south to the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he played for Omaha Lancers. At the end of the season, Ellis was named the goalkeeper of the year, player of the year and joined the All Stars team. Daniel spent the next three years at the University of Nebraska playing for the local team, and after the 2002-03 season he signed his first professional contract.

Professional career

Dan Ellis was selected in the second round of the 2000 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars Club. Ellis played his first NHL game on January 18, 2004 against the Los Angeles Kings [1] , but then played for three years for farm clubs - Utah Grizzlies , Hamilton Bulldogs and Iowa Stars in the AHL, Idaho Steelheads ”in the East Coast Hockey League . With the Steelheads in 2004, Dan won the Kelly Cup .

On July 5, 2007, Ellis joined Nashville Predators as a free agent. [2] Due to injury to the main goalkeeper of the team, Daniel left the starting lineup at the beginning of the 2007-08 season. His second match for the “predators” on October 25, 2007 against the Atlanta Thrashers , the Canadian held a “dry” - 3-0. On November 1, he again defended the game to zero (match against Vancouver Cacax ) and won his fourth victory of the season.

In the spring of 2008, Daniel received the nickname "snowstorm." He and the second goalkeeper of the team Chris Mason showed a weak game, and then the “predators” called for a substitution from the AHL - Pekka Rinne , but the Finn caught a blizzard along the way and he could not join the team. Ellis was released in the starting lineup in the game against Chicago Blackhawks , and he led the Predators to victory - 2: 1 B. This victory allowed him to gain a foothold in the starting lineup until the 2008 playoffs. In the two final games of the NHL regular season, he played two “shutouts” and helped the Predators make it to the playoffs. As a result, he was named the second star of the week in the NHL. At the end of the season, Dan showed impressive results and was recognized as one of the best goalkeepers. During the games, Ellis excessively lost weight and received intravenous fluids after matches.

June 20, 2008 Ellis signed a new contract with the "predators" in the amount of $ 3.5 million, designed for two years [3] . In the 2008-09 season, Ellis was not as productive as in the previous season, having gained only 11 victories against last year's 23, and for this reason, reserve goalkeeper Rinne took the place at the base.

During the 2009–10 season, Dan chalked up his 15th victory in 31 matches of the NHL regular season.

On June 29, 2010, the Canadian, who lost the fight to Pekke Rinne for a base, was exchanged with Dustin Boyd at Montreal Canadiens for Sergey Kostitsyn [4] , but on July 1, Ellis, who became a free agent, signed a two-year contract with Tampa Bay Lightning " [5] [6] .

In September, the hockey player’s Twitter post caused a great resonance, in which he talked about his attitude to the new NHL rules, according to which he would have to leave 18% of his salary in the future:

“If you lose 18% of your income - will you be happy? I can absolutely frankly say that the problem of money is now annoying me much more than in college days. I can’t explain this, and I never thought that I would be worried about my financial situation, but it’s true. One thing is for sure - money in no way makes you happier and does not make life easier. If you do not earn a lot of money, then I do not expect that you will understand me, just as I once did not understand what it is to risk my life daily, working in the police or in the fire department. I risk going out on the ice. Each profession has its pros and cons. ” [7]

These messages generated a storm of emotions among fans, who for the most part are not millionaires. The goalkeeper was reminded that he was the happy owner of a two-year contract worth $ 3 million, while unemployment was raging throughout the camp. A few days later, he apologized for his notes to those whom his statements had offended and closed his account.

On February 24, 2011, Ellis was traded at Anaheim Ducks for Curtis McAllinney [8] .

Before the 2012-13 season, Dan moved to Carolina Hurricanes [9] , concluding a one-year agreement with the club in the amount of $ 650 thousand. Due to injury to the main goalkeeper of the team Cam Ward, the Canadian played a significant part of the regular season games, playing for the farm club at the same time. Charlotte Checkers in the AHL.

In the summer of 2013, Hurricanes planned to continue working with the goalkeeper, but he notified management that he would enter the free agent market and on July 5 moved to his first NHL club - Dallas Stars [10] . The Texans signed a two-year contract with the player with an annual salary of $ 900 thousand.

On March 5, 2014, in the deadline of NHL exchanges, Ellis moved to the Florida Panthers in exchange for goalkeeper Tim Thomas [11] . In September, Daniel was sent to the AHL to play for the Panther Farm Club San Antonio Rampage .

On July 4, 2015, Ellis signed a one-year bilateral contract with Washington Capitals [12] . Currently stands for Hershey Bears Farm Club.
