Story
In a provincial French city, private cardiologists, led by Professor Brezet (Vanel), suffer losses from the effective work of the surgeon Pierre Lossre (Piccoli), who operates on social costs. They are trying to lure him to their side, increasingly increasing psychological pressure after each refusal to cooperate. Analyzing the events, Lossre, with the help of the local police commissioner Giraud (Ferrandis), restores the causes of the recent death of the family of a young, somewhat ambitious, but talented surgeon Dr. Berg (Depardieu). The latter learned that Brese is a collaborator who worked as mayor of this town under the Vichy regime . However, the Brese gang exploited Berg's weakness for a card game and publicly convicted him of cheating . With daily blackmail, they drove the young doctor to despair: he killed his wife and three young children, after which he shot himself. Pierre Lossre unsuccessfully tries to unveil the truth, but, unable to resist the conspiracy of silence, kills himself and his wife. According to the authors, the film is based on real events.
