Biography

Roman Catholic priest (since 1848). PR player .

From 1854 he lectured at Charles University in Prague, and from 1861 he was professor of Slavic philology (among his students were O.O. Pervolph and Samuel Chambel ).

Scientific activity

He carried out the codification of the Slovak language.

The author of the first “Grammar of the Slovak Language” (1850), which played a significant role in the normalization of the Slovak literary language on a Middle Slovak dialectical basis. He was also engaged in studies of the Czech literary language.

Known as a zealous champion of the authenticity of the Kraledvorska manuscript , in defense of which he published a number of articles in Czech periodicals.

Translator of “ Words on Igor’s Regiment ” into Czech .
