Game career
Gay Stewart began his hockey career in the Junior Hockey League with Port Arthur Bruins. In 1942 , at the age of 17, he was called up for one game of the Stanley Cup final and helped the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings . The following season, Stewart won the Calder Trophy as the best NHL rookie, ahead of Maurice Richard of Montreal Canadiens , who, after 16 games of the season, broke his leg and dropped out before the end of the season. Stewart was the first player in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup before Calder Trophy.
In 1943, Stewart was called up for service in the Royal Navy of Canada . Having been demobilized from the army in 1945 , he returned to Toronto and showed his best career result, scoring 37 goals and this was the last time the Maple Leafs player led the list of snipers for the season.
In 1947, Stewart as part of the Toronto won his second Stanley Cup, but at the beginning of next season he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks . Stewart played his last NHL game as a Montreal Canadiens player in 1954 .
