History

Former disputed territories

In the 1990s, relations between Cameroon and Nigeria deteriorated. The reason was the border between the states, stretching from Lake Chad to the Bakassi Peninsula (the total length of the border is 1,600 kilometers). In connection with the drying up of Lake Chad, the borders began to shift. At the end of 1993, a military conflict occurred between the countries on the Bakassi Peninsula. The peninsula remained for Nigeria.

Subsequently, the Cameroonian-Nigerian commission was organized, for the creation of which about 18 million US dollars were allocated. Relations began to improve. In 2003, the borders on Lake Chad were finally established. Since August 14, 2008, the Bakassi Peninsula belongs to Cameroon , being the extreme southwestern part of the Ndian Department of the Southwest Region . However, the Nigerian Senate does not recognize this decision as contrary to the country's constitution .
