Career

In clubs

David is a graduate of Oxford United Stars , a Northern Ireland club, and since 1981 has been a member of the Nottingham Forest club in England . It was not easy for him to break into the main team of “foresters”, since in the middle line young talented Englishmen Neil Webb and Steve Hodge competed with him. He played his first big football match in the 1984/85 season , when on March 30, 1985 he replaced Paul Hart during a home match with West Ham . David spent the rest of his matches for this team in the next three seasons, and he spent the second half of the 1986/87 season on loan at the Notts County Third Division club.

In October 1987, Campbell was bought by another Charlton Athletic club in England for £ 75,000. In March 1989, he was leased to the club of the Plymouth Argyle Second Division , where he played only a din match, after which he was acquired for £ 75,000 by the other club of the division - Bradford City .

From the 1990/91 season, he began to play in the Irish Championship : in December 1990, he spent 5 games on loan, for Derry City , and from January 1991 he moved to Shamrock Rovers . Campbell spent two part-time seasons at Rovers: in January 1992 he was leased to the Northern Irish Cliftonville .

The 1992/93 season began for David in November when he joined the Rotherham United club of the Second Division of England, where he only once replaced the league match. That season, he visited two clubs of the Second Division: West Bromwich Albion , where he did not play a minute, and Burnley , where after eight matches in the championship he was injured and dropped out until 1994 , when he played four games in February and scored one goal in the Third Division , being a leased club Lincoln City . From March 1994 until the end of the season he was on loan at the North Irish “ Portadown ”, with whom he became the second in the championship.

Before the start of the 1994/95 season, Wigan Athletic joined the Third Division without a contract. After 11 games for the club in the league championship and cup , in October 1994, Campbell was expelled from the team. In January 1995, he signed a contract until the end of the season with Cambridge United from the Second Division . David's debut match for the new team against Brentford was unsuccessful for him: Cambridge lost with a score of 0: 6, and Campbell himself broke his leg , which ended his professional career.

Campbell went on to play for the Tamworth , Sutton Coldfield Town , and Paget Rangers semi-professional clubs in England’s Southern Football League .

In national teams

Campbell has experience playing in the youth team of Northern Ireland . In anticipation of the 1986 World Cup, head coach of the Northern Ireland team Billy Bingham invited David to the team. On April 23, 1986, Campbell made his debut in a friendly match against Morocco (2: 1), replacing Ian Stewart in the second half, and the next time he entered the field in the national team in the third game of the group stage of the World Cup against Brazil (0: 3), where was replaced in the second half.

In the future, he spent another six games for the national team as part of the qualifying tournament for Euro 88 , but after two friendly games in early 1988, he was no longer called to the main team of the country.

In 1991, he played one match for the Irish Championship against the Northern Ireland Championship .
