Biography

Born January 29, 1956 in the city of Creil (department of Oise ). He graduated from the Economic Lyceum in Chantilly , then the University of Paris II (Pantheon-Assas) . He also holds degrees from the HEC School of Business and the Institute for Political Studies .

He began his professional career in 1981 as a personal finance consultant at Arthur Andersen . In 1986-1990 he worked as the General Director, Vice President and President of the Development Agency of the Oise Department.

Joining the Alliance in Support of the Republic Party (later transformed into the Union for the Popular Movement ) in 1981, Eric Woerth began his political career in 1983 in his hometown of Creil, where he stood for mayor but was defeated. After that, he reoriented from Kreia, traditionally supporting the left, to the neighboring city of Chantilly, where in 1990 he was elected a member of the city council.

In 1986, Eric Woerth was first elected to the regional council of Picardy on the list of the Association in Support of the Republic, in 1992 he became vice-president of the council, and in 1995 won the municipal elections in Chantilly, taking the post of mayor of this city.

Since 1993, Eric Woerth has been a close circle of the future president, Jacques Chirac , heading the financial group of his campaign headquarters in 1993-1995. In 1995-1997 he was an adviser to the Prime Minister Alain Juppe . In October 2002, he founded the prestigious political club Compass, which included 38 deputies of the reformist wing of the Union for the popular movement, supporting President Jacques Chirac.

In 2002, Woerth was first elected to the French National Assembly in the 4th constituency of the Oise department, after which he won the election twice more, in 2007 and 2012. He suspended his participation in the work of the National Assembly three times for the period of work in the French government.

In 2004, Eric Woerth joined the government as Secretary of State for Reform. Since that time, he began to draw closer to the future president, Nicolas Sarkozy . In the same year, Woerth was appointed treasurer of the Union for the Popular Movement, was the author of a fundraising project in support of the party from wealthy citizens.

Throughout his political career, Eric Woerth has repeatedly found himself at the center of scandalous proceedings involving financial fraud. In particular, back in 1990, when he resigned as president of the Development Agency of the Oise Department, he was paid severance pay in the amount of five monthly salaries, which attracted the attention of auditors and became the subject of discussion in the press. In 2010, he found himself at the center of a major scandal involving the illegal financing of the Union for the Popular Movement Party, Lillian Betancourt , the owner of L'Oréal and one of the richest women in the world (the so-called Werth-Betancourt case). Against the backdrop of this scandal, he was even forced to resign as party treasurer. In addition, he is suspected of participating in the sale of the hippodrome in the city of Compiegne to a group of persons close to the party’s leadership at a lower price and in violation of the procedures established by law.
