History
Shortly after the unification of Germany in 1991, the merger of the volleyball federations of the two German states - the GDR (Deutscher Sportverband Volleyball der DDR - DSVB) and the Federal Republic of Germany (Deutscher Volleyball Verband - DVV) - into a single German Volleyball Union. At the same time, the women's volleyball team of the united Germany was formed, which in the same year took part in the European Championship held in late September - early October. In their first match at the tournament on September 28 in Bari, the German team defeated the Romanian national team with a score of 3: 1. Subsequently, the German team took second place in their group, reaching the semifinals, where they lost to the USSR national team 0: 3, but in the match for the βbronze" they beat the Italian team 3: 1. 3rd place did not guarantee German volleyball players participation in the 1992 Olympics , since only two teams qualified for the Olympic volleyball tournament.
Speaking about the composition of the combined German national team, it should be noted that the vast majority of the players in it (9 out of 12) were volleyball players who had previously played for the GDR national team , which during the four previous European championships invariably became the winner ( 1983 and 1987 ) or the silver medalist ( 1985 and 1989 ) [3] . The most outstanding players from this cohort were two-time European champions A. Radfan, M. Arlt, W. Steppin (Oldenburg), G. Naumann (Jensen), champion of the continent S. Lame. The head coach of the German team has been appointed former coach of the GDR national team Siegfried KΓΆhler. The national team of Germany for all the time of participation in European championships has never been one of the winners.
In 1994, the German national team debuted at the World Championships held in Brazil . German volleyball players reached the quarter finals, where they lost to the Cuban national team , the undisputed leader of the women's world volleyball of the 1990s. In the consolation matches, the Germans defeated the teams of China and the USA and took the final 5th place.
In January 1996, at the European Olympic qualifying tournament held in Bremen , the German team became the first, ahead of the national teams of Russia , the Netherlands and Croatia , and secured participation in the Olympic Games that same year. The Olympic debut for the German team itself was unsuccessful. Having gained only two victories in 6 matches held, Germany became only the 8th.
In 1997, the team experienced a significant renewal of the roster. Of the former volleyball players of the former GDR national team, only S. Lame remained in the national German team. All this was not slow to negatively affect the results. At Euro 97, the German national team was not even able to leave the preliminary group, losing out of 5 matches played in 4. The same fate awaited the German volleyball players at the 1998 World Cup , where they lost all three matches of the group round. After that, head coach KΓΆhler left his post.
In 1999, Korean specialist Lee Hee Wang was appointed the new coach of the German national team. Under his leadership, the young German national team again became one of the strongest at the European and world level. The leading positions in the team were taken by such players as T. Hart, K. Cherlikh, A. GrΓΌn, H. Pahale, K. Beneke, A. Buagaa, K. Radzuvayt and others. In 1999, Germany reached the semifinals of the European Championships , a year later became the 6th at the Sydney Olympics , in 2002 she won the bronze medal of the Grand Prix , and in 2003, after a 12-year break, she won the European Championships , winning bronze medals. The truth is that between the last two tournaments an unfortunate failure wedged in the home world championship in 2002 , where the German team could not even reach the quarter-finals.
After some increase in the results of the team, which occurred in 1999-2003, then a decline began in her game. Having won the European Olympic qualification in January 2004 , in which all the leading European teams took part, at the Olympics in Athens, the German team was left behind the tournament after the preliminary stage. A year later, at the European Championships, Germans were also unable to leave the group. Only 11th place in the 2006 world championship led to changes in the coaching staff of the German national team. As the coach of the national team, Lee Hee Wang was replaced by Italian coach Giovanni Guidetti.
Under the leadership of the new coach, the German team for several years significantly updated its composition. Leading roles in it came K. Weiss, K. Furst , M. Kozukh , K. Sushke, H. Bayer, M. Brinker, M. Apitz, L. Thomsen, L. Durr. The best results of the German national team after 2006 were the silver medals of the European Championships 2011 and 2013 , the bronze Grand Prix of 2009 and the victory in the Euroleague 2013 . The failure should include, first of all, the failure of the German national team to the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.
In 2015, the head coach of the German women's team was the Italian specialist Luciano Pedulla, who replaced another Italian in this post - Giovanni Guidetti. The 2015 season, under the leadership of the new mentor, did not bring success to the national team - at the Grand Prix, German volleyball players were one step away from reaching the final stage (7th place), and dropped out of the fight at the quarter-final stage at the European Championships and European Games. In November of that year, Pedulla resigned. Felix Kozlowski was appointed the new head coach of the national team, who had previously worked as an assistant to Guidetti in the coaching staff of the German national team for several years.
The 2017 season, the German team spent in a significantly updated composition. Many leaders of past years were not involved in the national team, including such as FΓΌrst, Weiss, Kozuh, Bayer, Apitz, Sushke, Hank, Brandt, Thomsen, Hippe. Confidently qualifying as a participant in the 2018 World Cup , German volleyball players reached the quarter finals at the European Championships , where they lost to the hostess of the European championship - the Azerbaijani team - 0: 3.
