Detlef Kästner ( German: Detlef Kästner ; March 20, 1958 , Wurzen ) - German middleweight boxer , played for the German Democratic Republic in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Bronze medalist of the Summer Olympic Games in Moscow, winner of many international tournaments and national championships.

Biography

Detlef Kestner was born on March 20, 1958 in the city of Wurzen , state of Saxony . He was actively engaged in boxing from early childhood, already at a youthful level he showed decent results, so he was accepted into the Dynamo sports society in Berlin. He achieved his first serious success in 1977 when he took third place at the European Junior Championships in Izmir and won a silver medal in the GDR championship, losing only the more experienced Karl-Heinz Krueger in his weight category. In 1979, he boxed at the adult European Championships in Cologne, but in the second match in the tournament he lost to Olympic champion from Poland Jerzy Rybicki . Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow - he managed to reach the stage of the semi-finals here, after which he lost 0-5 to the Soviet boxer Alexander Koshkin .

After receiving a bronze Olympic medal, Kestner continued to enter the ring as part of the national team, taking part in major international tournaments. So, in 1981 he went to the European Championship in Tampere, already in the early stages of the tournament, fate brought him back to Koshkin, and again all five judges gave victory to the representative of the USSR. In 1982, Detlef Kestner boxed at the home world championships in Munich, had high hopes for this tournament, but again was left without medals, losing to the Olympic champion from Cuba Armando Martinez . Having suffered a defeat at these competitions, he remained an active athlete for another two years, but he did not achieve any significant achievements. He graduated from a sports career in 1984.
