Son of Conrad I of Oldenburg and Ingeborg of Braunschweig.
After the death of his father in 1368, he ruled Oldenburg together with his older brother Conrad II, and after the death of Conrad II (1386) with his son Moritz II.
He was married to Agnes von Honstein, father of Count Christian VI, ancestor of the kings of Denmark and the princes of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg.
