Biography

Born on February 23, 1919 in the village of Baranovka , now Zmeinogorsky district of Altai Krai, in a family of 14 people. The father of Ilya Yakovlevich, Yakov Grigorievich Shumakov, was one of the organizers of the collective farm in Baranovka. Because of this, he made a lot of enemies for himself, who eventually dealt with him. Ilya was orphaned at the age of 14. After graduating from a seven-year school, he immediately went to production. In 1939 he was drafted into the Red Army , where he found the Great Patriotic War . In battles he was seriously wounded three times. After the third wound, in 1944, on crutches he returned to his native village, where he first worked as a military instructor at school. Then he was elected chairman of one of the lagging agricultural cooperatives. A year later, on the recommendation of the district committee of the party, he was transferred to the collective farm "Lenin's Testament", and from there to the Tretyakov district executive committee as deputy chairman. He worked there for four years, and then returned to his native Baranovka. In 1950, he was elected chairman of the Voroshilov collective farm (since 1958 - “Russia”), which brought together 6 agricultural cooperatives. In a leadership position, he proved himself as a talented organizer of collective farm production, for which he was awarded the title Hero of Socialist Labor with the award of the Order of Lenin on the basis of a Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 11, 1957 [1] . For more than 30 years, Ilya Yakovlevich led the collective farm “Russia”. The selfless work of the collective farmers, a personal example of the chairman, his outstanding organizational skills helped to turn the economy into one of the most advanced in the region and country. The diversified collective farm “Russia” was famous for its high crop yields, herd productivity, and economic efficiency. The collective farm is the initiator of the early implementation of annual and five-year plans for all indicators, the first in the province awarded the Order of Lenin. During the leadership of I. Ya. Shumakov, the village of Baranovka became a model of improvement and high culture [2] . Ilya Yakovlevich Shumakov died in 1981 from a heart attack, during a business trip to Barnaul .

Memory

  • Streets in Barnaul and Zmeinogorsk are named after I. Ya. Shumakov.
  • The collective farm "Russia", which was headed by Ilya Yakovlevich Shumakov for more than 30 years, was renamed in his honor in 1981. In 2000, it was reorganized into the Agricultural Production Cooperative (SPK) "Order of Lenin collective farm named after I. Ya. Shumakov."
  • A monument to Ilya Yakovlevich Shumakov was erected in the village of Baranovka.
  • In 2009, the inhabitants of this village widely celebrated the 90th anniversary of the birth of I. Ya. Shumakov [3] .
