The current champion of the tournament, Swiss Roger Federer, managed to defend his title and for the third time in a row to achieve victory in the tournament. In the final, he beat Andy Roddick 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. In seven matches Federer lost only two sets - in the quarter-finals to James Blake and in the finals to Roddick.
