Work on its construction was carried out around 1150-1230, under the guidance of the sculptor Benedetto Antelami . According to the surviving records on the Baptistery portal, finishing work was started in 1196 . Construction was completed in 1270 , when the baptistery was consecrated. Marks a transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles of architecture.
It is a regular octagon , lined with marble , which was specially brought from Verona . In height it resembles a tower, the facades of which are composed of alternating hollow stone spaces. In the lower part of the building, in three of the eight faces, there are entrance arched portals , the other five sides are decorated with false arches that copy the portals. The inner space of the baptistery is represented by 16 arcades. Niches of arcades are painted with frescoes of the XIII - XIV centuries . Above the baptistery rises the dome.
