Match Participants

Magnus Carlsen - world champion since 2013, won the title in the match for the title of world champion 2013.

Viswanathan Anand, got the right to fight Carlsen after winning the applicants tournament in Khanty-Mansiysk.

Match organization

The organization of the match was very difficult. Until June 2014, it was not clear where the match would be held, since there was no official application alleged from Norway . In June, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov announced that the match will be held in November in Sochi and on an agreement on this with the Governor of the Krasnodar Territory Alexander Tkachev .

In the third week of August, Carlsen sent a request to postpone the match, because he was unhappy with the choice of venue. Anand, for his part, agreed to host the match in Sochi on that date. Carlsen signed the contract only in early September.

Thus, the organizer - the Agon company, the owner of the rights to host FIDE international tournaments [3] - had only 2 months to prepare [4] , however they managed and there were no complaints about their work [5] .

The main sponsors of the match were Gazprom and Summa. According to the official website of the championship, in 2014 a record result was reached in attracting a spectator audience - more than a million people daily. The total number of unique visitors during the match amounted to 10.5 million, including 2 million on the last day [4] .

Rules

Time control: 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for 20 moves and 15 minutes until the end of the game with the addition of 30 seconds for each move, starting from the 61st.

Match scores

Even before the start of the competition, commentators believed that Carlsen had a great chance of winning, but they assumed that Anand would take into account the mistakes of 2013 and will play harder. And so it happened: the victory was given to Carlsen with greater efforts, he prematurely won with the score in the won games 3: 1 against 3-0 the previous time. The match, according to commentators, turned out to be much more interesting precisely in connection with the stronger game of Anand [17] [18] .

The victory in the 11th game was assumed by Vladimir Kramnik , and Sergey Karjakin was mistaken in predicting a draw [19] .

In general, few doubted Carlsen's victory. Sergey Karjakin noted that Anand is not at the peak of form. Anand himself after the match honestly admitted that he took an unjustified risk and that Carlsen plays stronger and makes no mistakes [20] .
