On August 9, 1967, this territory was occupied by Biafra during the advancement of its armed forces to Lagos . On August 17, Albert Okonquo was appointed military administrator, who held this position until September 19, 1967. On September 19, 1967, Albert Okonquo proclaimed the independence of the Republic of Benin from Nigeria, while taking the side of Biafra in the ongoing civil war. On the same day, Albert became governor of the Republic of Benin.
The republic lasted a little more than a day. September 20, 1967, it was eliminated after the Nigerian troops captured this territory. The Republic of Benin was not recognized by any country of the international community, even Biafra did not have time to recognize it because of the short existence of this state.
