Biography

Jose Gomez Mustellier was born on January 28, 1959 in the city of Colombia , Las Tunas province. He began to actively engage in boxing, impressed by the performances of Teofilo Stevenson at the age of fifteen. After graduation, he chose a military career for himself, but during the service he did not stop training, he was preparing for competitions. He achieved his first serious success in the ring in 1977, when he won the Central America and the Caribbean championship in Panama City in the second middleweight title - from that moment he was entrenched in the main team of the national team. A year later, he became the champion of Cuba, subsequently repeating this achievement four more times. Later in 1978, he went to the World Cup in Belgrade, where he defeated all his rivals and won the gold medal.

In 1979, Gomez won the Pan American Games in San Juan, in addition, he was the first in almost all tournaments, where he boxed, in particular, at the international Golden Belt tournament in Bucharest. The following season, he won gold at the Cuban national Giraldo Cordoba Cardin tournament and, thanks to a series of successful performances, won the right to defend the country's honor at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow . At the Olympics, he again proved himself to be the best, defeating all opponents, including Romanian Valentin Silagi and Soviet boxer Viktor Savchenko in the semifinals and finals, respectively.

Having received a gold Olympic medal, Jose Gomez Mustellier continued to enter the ring for another three years, won national championships, won at secondary international tournaments. He completed his career as an athlete in 1983 [1] .
