About the album

Hughes originally planned to release a solo album before the collapse of Deep Purple. Initially, David Bowie was considered as a producer. [1] . Due to the Deep Purple tour schedule, Hughes simply didn’t have time to produce the album.

After the collapse of Deep Purple in 1976, Hughes returned to the album and began recording at the Lee Sound Studio in Pelsalle. Hughes' former groupmates for Trapeze, Mel Gallie and Dave Holland, recorded the guitar and drums for the album, respectively, and in 1976 Trapeze reunited for the tour. The reunion was short, the US tour was not completed.

Hughes returned to the studio in the autumn of 1976 to make the final touches to the album, but that was a year before the album was released. With the increasing popularity of punk rock , it was hard for Hughes to get support for the recording, so Play Me Out was originally released only in Germany . He was not released in the UK until 1978 , where he received little attention and was soon forgotten.

The album was reprinted in 1983 and 1990 in limited editions. In 1995, Play Me Out was re-released on RPM Records again, and this time five bonus tracks were included: Smile (a shortened single that never came out), two tracks were taken from an album supplement abandoned in 1978 and two from the 1994 sessions. Hughes believed that these songs were very close in spirit to Play Me Out.
