Elizabeth von Hohenstaufen (in Spain she was called Beatrice Schwabsky ; isp. Beatriz de Suabia ; March / May 1203 - November 5, 1235 , Toro ) - Queen of Castile (1219-1235) and Leon (1230-1235).

Life

Daughter of King Philip of Swabian (1176-1208) and Irina Angelina . Father was the granddaughter of the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Friedrich I Barbaross , and by mother, the Byzantine emperor Isaac II Angel .

After the death of her father in 1208, her cousin Frederick II took custody of her, and he married her and on November 30, 1219, married her to the king of Castile Fernando III (the future Saint Fernando III ). The wedding took place in the monastery of San Zoilo in Carrión de los Condes in Palencia . Having settled in Castile, Queen Elizabeth became known as Beatrice of Swabian.

During the marriage, the couple had ten children:

  • Leonor (1226 - died in childhood),

  • Manuel (1234–1283), Lord of Vilhena
  • Maria (died in childhood in 1235).

After the death of Beatrice Schwabska was buried in the royal monastery of Las Huelgas . Her son Alfonso X transferred the ashes of his mother to the Seville Cathedral .
