Description
It is characterized by a mountain meadow landscape and dissected relief. Granites, granodiorites are widespread. In the vicinity of the gorge, spruce forest, a variety of herbs and shrubs ( raspberries , honeysuckle , dogrose , hawthorn ) grow. The climate in the gorge is mountainous, with many cloudless days. The left tributary of the Big Almaty River , the Prokhodnaya River , flows through the gorge. In the gorge, the famous Alma-Arasan thermal-radon sulfur springs come to the surface. On the slopes of the Prokhodnaya river, in 1931, 16 sources were recorded, on the basis of which in the same year the balneological resort Alma-Arasan was founded. In recent years, most sources have disappeared [4] [5] .
As of July 2016, the Almarasan gorge is inaccessible from the bottom, the bridge on the path along the river is washed away, the path through the former sanatorium of Almarasan is closed by private territory guarded by men with machine guns. The private territory extends over several tens of hectares, surrounded by a fence and captures the entire slope from the cliff of the river to the rocks.
Environmental Threat
In the 1990s, the famous sanatorium Alma-Arasan located in the gorge was privatized, through the adjacent territory of which a public tourist route (trail) to Lake Issyk-Kul passed. In 2007, under the pretext of reconstruction of the sanatorium, huge areas of the gorge around the sanatorium, including the path to Issyk-Kul not belonging to the sanatorium, were blocked off (closed) by a high fence with barbed wire and protection was put up. It was reported that in 2010 the reconstruction will be completed, but after the repair the sanatorium never opened the door for visitors and tourists. The public area around the sanatorium is still inaccessible to vacationers and represents a closed private recreation area [6] .
In September 2011, it was reported the demolition of 26 cafes in the Alma-Arasan Gorge [7] .
