Biography
Ivan Sergeev was born on the Pankinsky farm (now Nekhaevsky district of the Volgograd region ). He graduated from elementary school. In August 1915, Sergeev was called up for service in the tsarist army. He participated in the battles of the First World War . In March 1918 he was demobilized. Returning to his homeland, he joined the Red Guard , and in June of the same year - into the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Participated in the battles of the Civil War , was wounded. In 1925, Sergeyev graduated from cavalry advanced training courses for command personnel, in 1939 - advanced training courses for command personnel at the Military Academy of the General Staff. Participated in the battles at Khalkhin Gol . Since June 1941 - on the fronts of World War II. He participated in the Battle of Smolensk , the Battle of Moscow , the Battle of Stalingrad [1] .
By September 1943, Guard Colonel Ivan Sergeyev commanded the 54th Guards Tank Brigade of the 7th Guards Tank Corps of the 3rd Guards Tank Army of the Voronezh Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper . On September 22, 1943, Sergeyev’s brigade successfully crossed the Dnieper in the vicinity of the village of Trakhtemirov in the Kanevsky district of the Cherkasy region of the Ukrainian SSR , after which it held a bridgehead on its western bank, reflecting numerous German counterattacks. In one of those battles, Sergeyev was seriously wounded and lost his leg [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of November 17, 1943 for “courage and heroism shown in the struggle against the German invaders,” the guard Colonel Ivan Sergeyev was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .
He participated in the Soviet-Japanese war . Since September 1946, Sergeyev commanded the Saratov Tank Technical School. In January 1949, with the rank of Major General, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived in Pyatigorsk . He died on April 12, 1962 [1] .
He was awarded two orders of Lenin, three orders of the Red Banner , two orders of Suvorov of the 2nd degree, the Mongolian Order of the Red Banner , the medal "XX years of the Red Army" , and a number of other medals [1] .
In honor of Sergeyev a street in Pyatigorsk was named [1] .
