Temple of Athena Alea

The ruins of a temple in Tegea

The Temple of Athena Alea (“protective, warm” [1] ; Greek. Αθηνά Αλέα ) is one of the most famous temples of the ancient Greek goddess Athena .

History

The first semi-ancient temple in honor of Athena was built, according to legend, the semi-mythical king Alei , but it burned down during a great fire along with most of the city of Tehei in 395 BC. e. [2] . In 365 BC e. the new temple on the site of the burned was built by architect Skopas [3] [4] . Laodika from Cyprus sent peplos as a gift to Athena Alea [5] . The shackles of the Lacedaemon captives hung on the walls of the temple. Also, the skin and fangs of the boar, obtained in the Calydon hunt , seized by the emperor Augustus, were kept for some time in the temple. In ancient times, the temple had the right of refuge [6] .

Architecture

This temple is one of the last built in the style of the Doric order. Corinthian half-columns adorn the walls of the cella. In architectural terms, the figures from the pediment composition of the temple, which were performed by Skopas himself and of which quite a lot of fragments remain, are of particular interest [7] . They are imbued with drama, demonstrate a rapid movement. During their execution, Skopas clearly violated the classically strict interpretation of the face, traditional for Greek plastic, deciding to fill his expression with vital emotions [8] .
