Horatio Caro ( born Horatio Caro ; July 5, 1862 , Newcastle upon Tyne - December 15, 1920 , London ) is an English chess player and chess theorist.

For many years he lived in Berlin, where he advanced to club competitions. Repeatedly participated in international tournaments and tournaments of German masters (in five of them he came to the finish line first). He returned to England after the outbreak of the First World War .

Contribution to Debut Theory
In 1886 Together with the Austrian chess player M. Kann, he studied the opening 1. 1. e4 s6. The results of the study in the same year were published in the journal Bruederschaft . The debut was later given a name in honor of its first serious researchers: the defense of Caro-Cannes .
Notable Party
Of the parties G. Caro stands out his victory over the future world champion Em. Lasker . It was the fastest defeat of the second world champion in official competitions.

Slavic defense
1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Kf3 Cf5 4. Qb3 Qs8. The beginning of all further difficulties. It was easier 4 ... Qb6 (5. cd C: b1). 5. cd cd 6. Kc3 e6 7. Cf4 a6? An amateur eclipse finds a future champion: defense with extreme pawns in the opening at the expense of development. It was necessary to play more naturally 7 ... Ks6! with the idea of 8. Kb5 answer 8 ... Bb4 + 9. Kpd1 Kpf8. In this case, the whole struggle was ahead. 8. Ka4 La7? And this is the second and already decisive mistake, as G. Karo himself notes in the notes to the party (see below). The ancient prediction that in chess battles mistakes often “go in pairs” in this case was fully confirmed. The unequal struggle was prolonged by 8 ... Kd7 9. Bs1 Qd8 10. Qb7 Kgf6. 9. Kb6 Qd8 10. Cb8! Qb8 11.Qa4 + Cre7 12. Ls1. Em. Lasker probably remembered this debut position for a long time. 12 ... g5. (See chart). 13. Ke5! Kh6 14. Kc8 +. Black surrendered (1: 0).
