History

The ancient county of Bigorr bordered in the south with Aragonia , in the west with Bearn , in the north with the counties Armagnac and Pardiac , in the east with Astarak and Magnoac , Neste ( Neste ) and Orom ( Aure ) and was divided into three parts [1] :

  • the plain (La plaine, or Rivière-Basse) with the city of Tarbes,
  • Rustan - at the San North,
  • mountainous part with three valleys - Lavedan ( Lavedan ), Campan ( Campan ) and Barezh ( Barèges ).

Under the dominion of the Romans ( fr ) there lived an Aquitaine tribe of Bigerrions ( Biguerres ), their main city was Turba . From the stone masses of the fortress of the city of Bigorra - Castrum Bigerranum - arose later Tarbes . [one]

When the country moved from the Visigoths to the Franks , it formed until the time of Louis the Pious a special county , whose owners were vassals of the dukes of Aquitaine or Hyenna . Regarding the inheritance dispute, King Philip IV imposed a sequestration [2] on the country in 1298 and elevated his son Karl the Beautiful to the dignity of Count Bigorre. [one]

King Edward III of England , like the Duke of Guyenne , gave the land in 1368 to Jean de Grail ( fr ). After the second conquest of the French, Charles VII presented the country in 1425 to Count Jean de Grail de Foix . Due to the marriage of land, Bigorra passed in 1484 with the county of Bearns to the house of Albre . [one]

King Henry IV inherited both counties from his mother and annexed them in 1607 to the French crown [1] .
