General Information
“Afremov’s House” is one of the first Moscow “skyscrapers” of the beginning of the 20th century - the first building in the city with eight floors in height, it was with its appearance that the word “skyscraper” and “turchez” came into use [1] . Until the appearance of the house of cheap apartments, E.K. Nirnzee was the tallest building in Moscow, many citizens were afraid to ride on it by tram. Despite the “dryness” of the facade (explained by considerations of economy), the house has classical signs of the Art Nouveau style: decorative metal brackets under the eaves, oval windows in the attics (“ bull eyes ”), the pattern of which is rhymed with the pattern of the porches.
One can guess the connection between the house of Afremov and the creations of the Parisian architect Hector Guimard (primarily with the famous Castel Beranger).
The house was advertised as the tallest residential building in Europe, which is quite possible, but requires specialist research.
Currently, it houses the cultural center "Red Gate".
Famous Residents
The actor Vladislav Galkin lived in the house for the last six months of his life. The building is classified as a cultural heritage site of regional importance. Also from 2008 to 2010, the actor Mikhail Bashkatov lived in this house, many sketches for the show Give Young! were shot in this house.
