Biography
Izumo no Okuni grew up in the vicinity of the Izumo Shrine Taisha , where her father, Nakamura Sanemon, worked as a blacksmith; some other members of their family worked there. Over time, Okuni became a miko - a servant of the temple.
Since 1603, she was a dancer in a temple by the Kamo River. The prayer dance that she performed inspired her to create her own style, which soon developed into a special kind of Japanese theater - kabuki, which combined singing, music and acting.
Since 1610, Perch has not been mentioned in written sources. The question of the year of her death remains controversial, researchers call 1613, 1640 and 1658.
Memory
In November 2002, a monument to Izumo no Okuni was erected on the banks of the Kamo River in Kyoto .
