History
Scotia Mocatta was founded in Halifax (Nova Scotia) in 1832 under the name Bank of Nova Scotia. The main objective of the bank was to facilitate transatlantic trade. Later, in 1833, Nova Scotia acquired The union bank of Prince Edward Island, but in the XIX century it expanded mainly due to the opening of branches, rather than acquisitions [6] .
The bank began to develop its branch network with Winsor (Nova Scotia) . Until 1882, the expansion was limited to Primorsky provinces , later the bank began to expand to the west, opening a branch in Winnipeg ( Manitoba ). The branch in Manitoba was later closed, but the bank continued to develop the Midwest, in particular, a branch was opened in Minneapolis in 1885, which later moved to Chicago (in 1892). In 1894, a branch was opened in Newfoundland , and in 1899 in Boston ( Massachusetts ) [6] .
In 1889, the bank opened a branch in Kingston ( Jamaica ) to facilitate the trade in sugar, rum and fish. In 1912, Bank of Nova Scotia merged with Bank of New Brunswick, and in 1914 was acquired by the Metropolitan bank (Toronto), making Scotia Mocatta the fourth largest financial institution in Canada. In 1919, Bank of Ottawa (Bank of Ottawa ) was absorbed [6] .
In 1920, branches were opened in London ( Great Britain ) and in Santo Domingo ( Dominican Republic ).
