Trackpads
The main elements of the Steam controller are two round high-resolution trackpad, located under the thumbs of the players. Each trackpad is a button. Trackpads are designed to increase the accuracy of input.
The controller supports entering one-to-one absolutely accurate format using virtualized control systems, such as a trackball, an adaptation centering joystick, and even a steering wheel. These surfaces can be programmed to support everything the game requires.
This feature allows you to play with the controller in those genres of games for which previously required the presence of a keyboard and mouse: step-by-step strategy and real-time strategy; casual games with cursor control; global space strategies; numerous indie games; simulators. [2]
Tactile feedback
To implement haptic feedback in trackpads, two linear resonant drives were used. These are small, strong, weighted electromagnets attached to both trackpads. Precise control over the frequency, amplitude and direction of their movement is possible. [2] Drives allow you to feel the rotation of a virtual trackball, clicks of a virtual mouse wheel, or rifle shots. All types of controller input (from triggers to trackpads) support tactile feedback.
Double-click
Triggers in this controller support analog and digital input modes separately, or simultaneously. This allows, for example, to point the fly at the target with a light touch of the trigger and make a shot with a stronger pressure.
Compatibility
Steam Controller is compatible with all games available in the Steam directory that support the controller.
Compatibility with games available outside of Steam is achieved using the option to add third-party projects.
For all games that do not support controller control, Valve has added a compatibility mode that allows the controller to impersonate a mouse and keyboard. The configuration utility for creating control settings allows players to create and share their own layouts for various games. All other players will be able to choose the configuration from the list of the most popular. These layouts are tied to the controller itself.
