Biography
Gerboard became a monk at the Michelsberg monastery of Benedictine Abbey in 1145. He held the post of scholastic [1] . In 1158, he begins a description of the life of Bishop Otton of Bamberg. It relies on the work of Ebon Michelsberg and an anonymous monk from the Prüfening monastery near Regensburg . In his hagiographic essay “Dialogus de Ottone episcopo Bambergensi,” Herboard included a variety of information gathered from oral sources, primarily Zefrid , Otton’s travel companion in Slavic Pomerania, and the prior of the Michelberg monastery Timon. Unlike his predecessors, Gerboard describes the biography in an artistically attractive form of dialogue between Zephrid and Timon.
The news of Russia is mentioned by Herboard in connection with the geographical description of the Baltic Pomerania and the presentation of the events of the reign of Boleslav Krivoustoy before the conquest of Pomerania.
